Government Reveals WiMAX License Winners

In late July the National Communications Commission (NCC) named six winners of licenses to provide WiMAX (worldwide interoperability microwave access) services in Taiwan : Far EasTone Telecom Co., Vastar Cable TV Systems Corp., Tatung Telecom Co., Vmax Telecom Co., First International Telecom Corp., and Global On Corp. The NCC notes that the six will have to complete preparations and receive their special operating licenses within two and a half years following receipt of their preparatory permits, and must begin operating no later than six months after that.

The issuance of the six WiMAX licenses is expected to result in an additional investment of NT$48 billion in network construction. The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) will, in addition, allocate NT$9.6 billion to integrate related resources and help private companies develop the WiMAX industry through the plan for accelerated WiMAX R&D and the Mobile Taiwan promotion plan. This will stimulate another injection of private investment projected at NT$31 billion.

The MOEA indicates that in addition to the commercial opportunities provided by the installation of base stations and related equipment, there will also be a huge market for applications. Once the WiMAX infrastructure is established, new mobile applications services can be developed and this will bring with it a demand for new equipment and new parts. The government will strive to build Taiwan into a global WiMAX center by encouraging cooperation between domestic companies and big international enterprises.

WiMAX is one of the most important emerging wireless technologies in the world today, driven by the advantages of broad application scope, high mobility, good interoperability, and relatively low installation cost. With the setting of international WiMAX technological standards, countries all over the world are engaged in the establishment of WiMAX trial networks.
