Term Extended for Non-inspection Customs Clearance by Approved Companies

On July 28, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, a unit of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, announced a further lengthening of the validity of the inspection-exempt customs-clearance code for approved companies. The new rules extend the period of inspection-free customs clearance authorization from one year to two years, with implementation retroactive to Jan. 2006. The measure is expected to benefit 30 electronic and information companies, thus strengthening their competitiveness.

The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection notes that since the non-inspection program was first implemented in 2002, it has greatly reduced the time that preferred companies need to carry out customs clearance for imported IT and electronic products used as commercial samples, exhibition products, and products for R&D and testing or for re-export. The Bureau has instituted this new liberalization to encourage companies to apply for the status of an ˇ§approved companyˇ¨ and take advantage of the preferential customs procedures available to such companies.
