Maersk Extends Contract with Kaohsiung Harbor for Five Years

¡@¡@On April 21, the Maersk Taiwan Ltd. signed a contract with the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau to extend its lease of two container berths in container terminal No. 5. Maersk Taiwan is a subsidiary of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group of Sweden, the biggest shipping company in the world. In addition to its significance as a strong gesture of confidence and its effect on industrial clustering, the contract extension will also help to consolidate Kaohsiung's position as the sixth-largest commercial harbor in the world.

¡@¡@Maersk chose Kaohsiung Harbor as its Asian container hub because of its outstanding geographic location. The company accounts for a full 15% of all containers handled at Kaohsiung Harbor. Last year Maersk signed a contract with the harbor bureau extending its lease of No. 118 and 119 container berths in the No. 4 container terminal for five years, and this year's contract secures the lease on container berths No. 76 and 77 in container terminal No. 5 up to 2010.

¡@¡@Kaohsiung Harbor handled 260 million metric tons of cargo and 8.8 million TEUs of containers last year. The three biggest container shippers were Evergreen Marine, American President Lines, and Maersk.
