Excel Communications, Inc. was founded in 1988, with the vision of Kenny Troutt. A year later, Kenny was joined by Steve Smith, who introduced the company's Multi-Level Marketing business model.

In 1997, Excel acquired a sizable fiber-optic network with the purchase of Telco Communications Group. After merging with Montreal-based Teleglobe Inc. in late 1998, Excel started on the road to global expansion with an initial expansion into Canada.

The premise fueling Excel's success is the power of personal relationships. Excel's formula combines a strong line of telecommunications products and services with the network marketing business model. The result is a remarkable business opportunity for anyone with the entrepreneurial drive and commitment to make money and help others do the same.

Exel leverages best-in-class technology to improve the visibility and control of product and information throughout the supply chain. Sophisticated warehousing and transportation management systems are cost-effectively deployed to improve inventory management and transportation efficiency. Integrating these systems with other enterprise resource planning applications streamlines information flow across businesses and facilitates e-business implementation.
TRANSLATING TECHNOLOGY INTO CLIENT ADVANTAGE

As demands made on the supply chain have become ever greater, logistics companies have focused on increasing their service to optimum levels. So where can improvements in performance now come from? In recent months, Exel has demonstrated the numerous client benefits which new technologies offer.

The Challenge
The escalating requirements of retailers seeking to gain competitive edge are well known: shorter delivery windows, 24/7 operations and 100% order fill all of which are pushing costs down line to suppliers. Meanwhile, fuel prices are high and there is pressure from the growing environmental lobby to rationalise vehicle runs. Companies need greater visibility of their supply chains and expect to understand how their supply chain expenditure is being allocated. The balance between service quality and cost of operation is under the spotlight.

The Solution
Over recent months, Exel has made significant investment in two areas of new technology: one to enhance warehouse management and the related reporting to clients: the other to
improve the control of its fleet and facilitate better communications with both clients and retailers in the delivery process.

Timesmart is Exels new process management tool. Developed in-house at a fraction of the cost of off-the-shelf systems, it delivers management information, supervisory control and an employee reporting structure based on real time activity measurement within the warehouse. Uniquely, Timesmart provides a detailed measure of individual employee, working shift or group activity, management performance, mechanical handling equipment (MHE) and warehouse utilisation. All this it delivers - accurate to the minute - into a Data Warehouse which identifies cost control opportunities and helps troubleshoot potential bottlenecks or disruption in the supply chain. The Data Warehouse is a powerful tool, able to compare activities and performances and produce an infinite variety of reports. Standard Minute Values (SMVs) can also be added for any activity so that actual performance can be measured against targets.

This year, Exel has also introduced Isotraks fleet management technology into vehicles serving its 850,00 sq ft multi-user centre at Bawtry as part of a 500 vehicle roll out. Linked to Exels Managed Transportation System (MTS) which captures all transport activities, Isotrak gives transport managers the tools for resource planning, real-time fleet management and in-cab communications as well as sophisticated management reporting. By extending the Isotrak system out of the transport office and into the customer services area, staff in this department have real-time visibility of the delivery status and on-going communication with drivers allowing response time to customer queries to be substantially reduced. If a vehicle cannot complete an allocated job, Exel can now divert other trucks nearby to complete the delivery, or if there is traffic congestion or a hold-up at a store, the Company can take action to prevent delay in the supply chain.

The Results
Exels clients have benefited from greater visibility and control of their supply chains, while retailers can now anticipate additional reliability in deliveries. Together, this supports Exel in its objective of providing seamless supply chain solutions from manufacturing plant to retail floor. Commenting on the experience of Timesmart and Isotrak technology, John Winston, Managing Director of Exel UK, says: Timesmart benefits everyone because the system highlights opportunities for improvement at all levels and it allows our clients to be as fully informed as they wish. The introduction of Isotrak has been no less impressive. Within just the first month, engine idling time was reduced by 80%, there was a significant reduction in fuel usage and the information released by the Isotrak system enabled us to troubleshoot delivery problems as they arose and achieve a successful conclusion.

Good design is at the heart of an effective supply chain solution. Exel has developed a reputation for consistently developing innovative solutions that streamline operations and improve control. Experienced people employ the methodology outlined in the Exel Way to systematically identify problems and opportunities, develop solutions that consider all alternatives and create detailed plans that result in flawless start-ups. This same methodology can be employed to analyse and improve business processes across the enterprise and manage people and projects in a way that minimises the impact of change on an organisation.

Computer simulation is speeding the design process by using live data to build comprehensive, three-dimensional simulations of warehouse processes, allowing customers to see how a bespoke solution will perform before it is implemented. This technology is also being used when new equipment is added, or as part of continuous improvement programs, identifying where bottlenecks could occur and analysing equipment and personnel utilisation.
